This morning is the first since Labor Day that I have started the workday without an intense amount of anxiety and stress. It has not been all bad: anxiety and stress are ways to motivate, after all—to flee from the predator, to fight the foe. The cause was pretty simple: Martha Bayne left, and I decided to take over her job, which included continuing and starting publicity campaigns for 3 books. It was, of course, a decision I made, and thus could only blame myself for! What I absolutely did not see coming in mid-October was the news of the departure of Dan Crissman, our other staff editor, as well: tomorrow is his last day.
Dan has been invaluable to Belt. When he moved to Cleveland, after working in New York publishing for a decade, and came on board, he taught me how, well, publishing works.
